A snowy transition to one of the most beautiful huts in the Balkan Mountains - Mazalat hut

The idea for this adventure originated in October, when my friend and I visited Mazalat hut. We looked at photos from there on the internet and we were very impressed and decided to visit it. In autumn the place is quite beautifully dotted with yellow and red leaves, and the snow-capped peaks protrude from the side.

And then we thought: What will be here in the winter? We need to check! Said, done. We made an appointment with friends and set a date in mid-December. However, things did not happen then and we postponed the walk for January. And we still didn't know what change that would bring. The set dates were January 9 and 10 - Saturday and Sunday. The time was approaching and we were excited. The day of departure was getting closer, and we looked impatiently at the camera from the hut. There is no snow :( Friday night and last preparations. The forecast is for cold weather and we are preparing the thick clothes. We wake up early at 5 and a half in the morning. We look outside and what to see. It has been snowing all night and it is nice in Sofia. We get dressed, take the food and luggage and go down to clean the car. We set off for Mazalat. The adventure awaits us!

Along the way, everything is white and so beautiful. The driver follows the road, and everyone else stares sideways. Incredible beauty! We arrive in front of the Partisan Song hut, where we will start our transition. We put on hats, scarves and go through the woods. Several groups have already passed and the snow has been dug up and mud can be seen below, but this is at the very beginning. Further on the trail there is more snow and everything is white and beautiful. A small stream passes along the path and we step carefully so as not to end up with wet shoes. The group is large and we often stop to take pictures, enjoy the views or just for a sip of tea. In moments when we go out in the open, the wind blows and it feels very cold. But in the forest it is extremely pleasant to walk and we even undress lightly.

Without much haste we climb the last hill and see Mazalat hut in front of us! Ah, what a beauty!

The whole hill is in white and looks like a completely different hut, compared to our last visit in the fall. We happily shout "hurray" and go inside to warm ourselves by the fireplace. It's warm inside, lunch is ready and we sit down to eat from the delicious dishes of the huts. Fed and satisfied, we go to leave our luggage and change our clothes. We look at the GPS tracker and it shows us that we have traveled nearly 10 km. Our time is about 3 hours (excluding breaks) for the last to reach the top. We leave the luggage and the faster ones have already settled on the table and are playing white. We go out to play in the snow before we start board games. Time passes imperceptibly and we fall asleep with glowing faces from the light of the burning fireplace.

We wake up and head to the kitchen for breakfast. The huts have made great fried slices and tea, and we eat them so fast and ask for more. Having eaten well, we head to the rooms and collect our luggage. A road awaits us. During the night a new portion of snow fell and it was even more beautiful, but also difficult to cross. We set off slowly and without rushing down. After about 3 hours we are at the cars. The faster ones are already there and have cleared most of the cars. We get involved in groups and help others. Satisfied, but also sad that it ended so quickly, we promise to return. But for more days!
