Popina laka`s waterfall - beauty and coolness at the foot of Pirin Mountain

Popina laka's waterfall is very beautiful and attractive, especially during the summer months. It is located about 20 km from Sandanski (about 180 km from Sofia) at the foot of Pirin Mountain and attracts many tourists looking for coolness in the hot summer months or looking for beautiful views in the lower part of the mountain. It is located in the area of Popina Laka and is very easily accessible by car and only a few minutes walk to it.

How to get to the waterfall?

The waterfall is located 20 km from the town of Sandanski at the foot of Pirin Mountain. It is located at 1230 meters above sea level in the area of Popina Luka, hence its name.

You can get there by car or by bus from the bus station in Sandanski. Currently, buses on the route run on Saturdays and Sundays in the direction of Sandanski - Popina Luka at 8:30 and 16:30, and back at 9:30 and 17:30. (For current information, check the schedule of the bus station in Sandanski)

How high is the waterfall?

According to various sources, the height varies between 12 and 15 meters. For me, this is not as important as his beauty, which is undeniable.

When is it appropriate to visit it?

The waterfall is full of water all year round. Of course there will be more water in the spring, but you can see it all year round. In the pool under the waterfall through the warmer months you can see people bathing.
In winter, part of the water along the waterfall freezes and this makes it even more attractive, but the weather is quite "biting" in this period.

How much time I need to walk around?

After parking the car by the road, it takes you no more than 5 minutes to reach the waterfall. You can see the waterfall from above, and also go down to the bottom, where the water falls. I would recommend that you take between 15-30 minutes. At the bottom there is a bench where you can sit and enjoy the view.

If you want to extend the walk you can go down a path down the river to a second waterfall, which is also extremely beautiful. From there you can go back or turn left onto a path to get to the main road.

Is the path steep? Are there scary areas?

The trail is forested and not very well maintained. If it's muddy it can get a little slippery, but going down shouldn't be a problem for people that are active. I would not recommend it for people with a strong fear of heights and adults. It will definitely not be a problem for children.

Which river is the waterfall on?

According to the sign placed at the beginning of the trail, the waterfall is on the Sandanska Bistritsa River. Wikipedia, for its part, has a different opinion and states that the river is Bashliytsa (which merges with the Sarchaliytsa River a little down and forms Sandanska Bistritsa).

Can i take my dog?

Definitely yes. Your dog will definitely have fun in nature and will run up and down the path. Our Jerry did not stop welcoming the newcomers by the waterfall up the path.

Is there a comfortable place for a picnic?

There are comfortable places on the lawn to put on a picnic blanket and eat quickly.

What's interesting nearby?

  • Nearby is the park of St. Vrach in the town of Sandanski, where I recommend you to go for a walk. Definitely try the homemade ice cream they sell there, and why not ride a water bike in the "Lake".
  • On the way to Sandanski there is a new Zoo, where you can see kangaroos, goats and other interesting animals. Stop by - it's free and very interesting. See more here
  • The town of Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria and is located only 20 km from Sandanski. It is famous for its sand pyramids, good wine and interesting history. Definitely visit it.
  • Rozhen Monastery - only 28 km. from Sandanski this monastery should be in your plans for a holiday in this area. Very beautiful and interesting with large vines in the yard and very well preserved. I recommend it with both hands. Read more about it over here.
