Walk in Zheravna, Bulgaria where the time has stopped

Zѐravna is a village in southeastern Bulgaria. It is located in the municipality of Kotel. Zheravna is a world architectural monument. The population of Zheravna reaches about 500 people.

There used to be an old Thracian settlement called Potuk in this place. There are several versions of the origin of the name: one is that it comes from the bird, which is very implausible because cranes never land in the area; the other - from "zherna", "zherka", "zherkov" - words with an Old Slavic root meaning mill. This version is more plausible, as there were many mills in the area. In the recent past, Zheravna was called Zheruna, which after the Liberation gradually passed into Zheravna.

The village is extremely quiet and typical of the mountain towns as if time has stopped. People are in no hurry, everything happens somehow smoothly and casually. This mood also drifts away when you walk on the old roads. The houses are wooden and although most of them have been restored, they have kept the spirit of the past.

The writer Yordan Yovkov was born in the village and you can visit his native house, which was made as a museum.
The Folk Costume Festival also takes place here (usually in the middle of August).
