How to get to the museum?

image
The museum is located in the center of the city of Teteven. It is located on Sava Mladenov Square and you can reach it on foot. There are enough parking spaces along the square.
Teteven is located about 100 km from Sofia, 85 km from Pleven and 140 km from Veliko Tarnovo. It is most easily accessible from Northern Bulgaria.

How long it takes to look around?

I would recommend that you set aside an hour or so to explore the museum. There are many different exhibits in the expositions that will attract your attention and intrigue you. I would definitely recommend that you look into it with a talk. The curator Tsonka Petkova is a young person who is extremely well acquainted with the history of the museum. She will manage to make you feel this place with its authenticity and beauty thanks to her fascinating narration.

What will I be able to see in the museum?

image
The museum is divided into three main expositions that you will be able to explore - Archaeology, Ethnography and Renaissance, which present the history of the city from antiquity to the Liberation of Bulgaria from Turkish slavery. The exhibits are more than 4000 and are of the most different types.

The first section is Archeology - in it you will find various tools of labor from the Late Paleolithic and Neolithic, vessels, votive tablets, weapons, coins, animal bones and others. We are impressed by the skull and jaw of a cave bear, as well as a rhinoceros tooth, horn chisels, flint scrapers, various jewelry and cutting tools. A large part of the objects were found in the nearby caves. Further we see Roman and Byzantine coins, axes, various votive tablets and other interesting objects.

The second section is Ethnography - it tells us about the life of the local Tetevenians, about their crafts, their clothes and objects from their homes. The locals have long been engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as hunting and fishing, woodworking, shoemaking and weaving. In addition to handicraft items, you can view the costumes specific to each settlement, as well as the beautiful dresses of the local ladies. I was very impressed by the wood carving of the local craftsmen - incredible craftsmanship.

The last section in the museum is dedicated to the Revival and the struggle for liberation in this region - here in 1870 Vasil Levski founded the Teteven Revolutionary Committee. It includes over 50 Teteven citizens (men and women) who are ready to fight for the liberation of the homeland. One of them is Sava Mladenov, after whom the square in front is named, who actively participated in the revolutionary movement, was part of the Boteva Cheta and helped Levski to spread the idea in the region. He unfortunately died, due to betrayal, in the area of Kostina near Ribaritsa. In addition to letters and photos of the revivalists, you can also see their weapons - flintlock rifles, revolvers, sabers and other military items. At the end of the exposition there are also several flags of the revivalists.
